"Workshop style teaching" denotes one of those most suitable methods for school health education. In this paper, we suggest how high schoolers may be instructed against smoking in health classes by means of the workshop style teaching method. The reasons are as follows : 1) Health guidance and health education are given more emphasis in school by the new course of study which was begun in 2002-3. 2) There has been on going demand for to be health classes to be changed into a form in which students may play an active part in the learning process. However, most recent classes employ unilateral lecture format which makes it virtually impossible for students to take an active part in learning. 3) In recent years, some educators have considered life-skill education as indispensable for health education in school. This requires that students play leading parts, but it only deal with individual student problems such as the intention to smoke, the refusal to smoke, assertiveness, and attitude toward smoking. We suggest the following framework for program : 1) The program should be a combined health class with a period for integrated study. Strictly speaking, a health class should comprise 2 periods and "Period for integrated study" is 4, for a total of 6 periods. The content of this class should be "Smoking and Health" in high school. 2) In the first 2 classes, students learn about smoking and discuss the activities of the smoking-free movement outside of school. In the next 2 periods in "Period for integrated study, " they will have some activities to promote this movement. In the last 2 periods, they will report their activities. 3) The format of this program will be a "Workshop" to help students to take a creative part. 4) This program is composed of elements such as goal setting, active thinking about the best possible way for students to make for a better society, considering and furthering any new tasks which occur during the course. Points to note in this program are as follows : 1) It is necessary to devise each period in accordance with the situation of the students and the community. 2) It is important that this program should not come to an end with only the completed in only 6 periods, but that it continues, because it is significant in getting students into "cooperative and creative learning."
