A Device for Orientated Cutting of Crystals and Its Operation and Applications

A new apparatus for cutting crystals along any desired crystal planes has been devised and constructed. The main part of the apparatus consists of a rotating-wheel cutter, a crystal-holding goniometer, and an optical system, all of which are mounted on a common base. Additional attachments for the circulation of coolant, automatic cutting feed, and automatic stop are also provided. With this apparatus, at first any desired crystal planes along which a crystal is to be cut off can be determined rapidly and accurately by the light figure method and then the crystal can readily be cut off along the determined crystal planes by the rotating-wheel cutter. The accuracy of cutting along a specified crystal plane is within 0.5゜, although the time required for cutting varies widely with the kinds of crystals. Actual examples of cutting some crystals are given. This apparatus can also be used for the perfect, accurate and rapid orientation determination of single crystals and of individual grains in a polycrystalline rod or plate by the light figure method. Detailed procedures for the orientation work and its accuracy are illustrated.
