It has been found that nodular graphite steel may be more readily obtained in the as-cast state by adding a suitable amount of Fe-Ca base alloy to molten steel of hypereutectoid composition and of lower silicon content. Steel samples containing 1.1〜1.5% C were melted in a magnesia-lined high-frequency induction furnace or in a basic electric furnace. The melt for the nodular graphite steel castings was divided into two or three parts, each being treated with 0.8 or 2.0% of Fe-Ca base alloy and cast into a CO_2 sand mould or a dry sand mould of keel block type. The melt for the nodular graphite steel was cast into an iron mould, being treated with 0.5 or 1.0% of Fe-Ca base alloy. After various heat-treatments, specimens were machined from these steel castings and from rolled steels. The results obtained may be summarized as follows : The mechanical properties of nodular graphite steel castings in the heat-treated state were better than those of the as-cast state. The specimens with spheroidized pearlite structure showed high strength and high ductility such as the tensile strength of 70〜85 kg/mm^2 and both the elongation and the reduction of area of about 10%. They were also excellent in fatigue strength. With increasing carbon contents, the ratio of graphitization increased and the specimens with ferrite structures showed stronger graphitization than those with any other structures. Nodular graphite steels showed favourable strength and ductility when they were heat-treated in the range of 800° to 850℃. It seems that the amount of free graphite in the case of quenched- and tempered-specimens had no stronger influence on static mechanical properties.
