Energy of the Order-Disorder Transformation of MgIn as a Superlattice with the L1_0 Structure

The specific heat of magnesium-indium alloys near the equiatomic composition was measured in order to determine the configurational energy due to the transformation from the ordered phase of the L1_0 structure (CuAu I type) to the disordered solid solution of the face-centered cubic structure. The transformation was of the first degree, since the specific heat vs. temperature curve of the alloy of 48.36 at. % In showed a very sharp peak accompanied with the latent heat at the transition temperature 328℃. The configurational energy changes due to the transformation were given as 680 and 820±60 cal/g. atom for the alloys of 48.36 and 50.50 at. % In, respectively. The maximum transition temperature was not observed just at the stoichiometric composition MgIn, but at a concentration of indium slightly less than 50 at. %.
