Epitaxial growth of Ni, Pd, Cu, Ag, Au and Al evaporated onto NaC1 and KCl cleaved in vacuum has been studied by electron diffraction and electron microscopy. When the pressure is not very low (10^<-4>〜10^<-5> mmHg), a considerable lowering of the epitaxial temperature of the parallel growth occurs for thick films on NaCl. When the pressure is very low (10^<-7>〜10^<-10> mmHg), deterioration of the parallel growth and enhancement of the (111) orientation take place for Au, Ag and Cu on NaCl. It has been confirmed for initial stages of growth in ultrahigh vacuum that no orientation of nuclei other than the (111) and (001) orientations exist on NaCl and KCl. Structure of a multiply twinned particle formed on a 111 nucleus has been studied in detail. Influences of temperature, adsorbed gas molecules, radii of substrate ions and polarizability of metal atoms on the orientation of nuclei are discussed in detail.
