A study was conducted on the recovery of titanium from Ilmenite by the Nitro-fluor process. A complete disintegration of the Ilmenite was achieved within two hours in a nonaqueous HF-NO_2 azeotrope boiling at 52℃. During decomposition complex metallic compound were produced, and most of titanium dissolved in the azeotrope while iron was selectively precipitated. For further isolation of the complex compounds, titanium bearing compounds was heated in the argon or argon-azeotrope vapor atmosphere, and pure TiF_4 or nitrosylium penta (hexa) fluorotitanate was obtained by selective volatilization. The fundamentals underlying the recovery of the components of the azeotrope which are chemically consumed during this process were studied. Although this research has shown that the Nitrofluor process is superior in recovering not only titanium but also beryllium, zirconium and many other elements from their respective minerals, further fundamental investigations are necessary to establish the process.
