The oxygen concentration in a carbon-saturated liquid iron was studied experimentally by using a high pressure technique. A pressure-tight furnace was constructed. The sample melt in equilibrium with 0 to 25 atmospheric pressure of CO was prepared. After sampling the oxygen content in the melt was determined by the vacuum fusion method. The results obtained are as follows. In the case of furnace-cooled sample, the analytical values of the oxygen content ranged from 20 to 40 ppm and were independent of the CO-pressure. It was considered that these samples adsorbed a large quantity of oxygen after sampling. In the case of sample cast in a copper mould, on the other hand, the analytical values ranged from 2 to 10 ppm and the dependence on the CO-pressure could be expressed as A×P_<CO>+B, where A and B are constants at a constant temperature, A being 0.23 and 0.16 (ppm/atm) at 1, 200 and 1, 500℃, respectively. It was considered that the terms A×P_<CO> and B corresponded to the dissolved and the adsorbed oxygen, respectively. At two temperatures of 1, 200 and 1, 500℃ studied, the equilibrium constants K' (=P_<CO>/(%C×%O)=10^4/(A×%C)) are 10, 000 and 12, 000, respectively ; the activity coefficient of oxygen f_O was calculated to be about 2 and 3 in the carbon-saturated melt at respective temperatures by using the values of K and f_C usualy accepted. The values of interaction parameters, e_O^<(c)>=∂log f_O/∂% C and ε_O^<c)>=∂lnγ_O/∂N_C were caclculated to be about 0.1 and 5, respectively, in the experimental temperature range. It should be noticed that these results are different in sign from the experimental results by other workers.
