The vacuum melting of Fe-O, Fe-S, Fe-C, Fe-C-S and Fe-Si-S alloys was carried out at 1600℃, by using a high frequency induction furnace and the rate of desulfurization was examined by applying Langmuir's equation and an equation based upon Fick's first law. The rate of deoxidation was also investigated. The effect of sulfur on the deoxidation of Fe-C alloys was considered from the change in the surface tension of iron melt due to the presence of sulfur.
