1. During 1949 and 1950 experiments have been conducted concerning the peanut in relation to three things - the growth of sterile flowers due to the deformity of the pistil, the development of the seeds in the pod, and lastly the sterile pollen. 2. The growth of the sterile flowers due to the deformity of the pistil was discovered 3-5 per cent with all varieties in both the early and the vigorous stages of efflorescence, while with all varieties of the early peanuts in the later stage the figure rose to almost 30 per cent. The late peanut, in the later stage, however, produced only 3 per cent unusual growth. 3. (I) The average number of the ovules in the ovary and the ratio between the two-ovule and the three-ovule pods have both been discovered invariable and fixed in each variety and that neither was very little influenced by the efflorescent time on the same stock. (II) With regard to the unusual sseding researches have been made in relation to th3 unusual growth in the incipient and the desinent stages, respectively. The growth of the unusual seeds in the incipient stage seems to-vary in each variety. The Valencia variety has been found most subiect to such growth. But ho such thing has been discovered in any of the varieties in'the desinent stage of growth. (III) The unusual growth in the incipient stage of both the three- and fourpodded Valencia variety has been found most frequent in those pods in the basal position, while the unusual growth in the desinent stage has been discovered mostly in those pods in the tip position. (IV) It may be said with the Valencia variety that the more the seeds are contained in a single pod, the more frequent, though not in a marked degree, was the unusual growth in the incipient stage. But no such thing was found with a two-seeded pod. (V) The microscopic observation of the unusual seeds in the incipient stage seemed to reveal that though the fertilization was achieved in most of them, at least, they soon ceased growing and then passed into, degeneration, 4.
