Activity rates matrix is a table that describes how many percentages of persons are engaged in what kinds of activities at every time slots in a single day. These data have been relatively neglected in time use studies, although they contain much valuable information. I have been focusing mainly on developing methods for analyzing activity rates data to find facts. The purpose of this paper is to show a general approach for comparing a pair of activity rates matrices by arranging existing methods in systematic way. In this paper, we are using a pair of activity rates matrices of 20X48, that is, a matrix of male clerical workers and a matrix of female clerical workers as an example for showing the structure of our general approach. The general approach for comparing a pair of activity rates matrices is aiming at clarifying the extent of similarity of people's life-styles of different statistical categories. The general approach can be divided into (1) Activity analysis, and (2) Time slots analysis. Activity analysis is aiming at judging the similarity of a pair of activities, for example, between sleep activity of male clerical workers and that of female ones. The length of each activity rate vector data is 48. We do the same way of analysis across 20 activities on by one. On the other hand, time slot analysis purports to judge the similarity of a pair of the same time slot data, for example, between the time slot vector data of six to a half past six o'clock of male clerical workers and those of female ones. The length of each time slot data is 20. We make the same analytical procedures across 48 time slots one by one. When we make activity analysis, we attempt a comparison between a pair of line graphs that shows the fluctuation of activity rates. Our activity analysis is further divided into 1) Shape of graph analysis and 2) Height of graph analysis. We apply Chi-square test to shape of graph analysis, and F-value test to height of graph analysis. And, as for the time slots analysis, we apply Chi-square test to it. Mobilizing all these analyses help us to make deep analyses on the similarity of a pair of matrices.
