This paper treats of self-understanding of Koreans living in Japan in the modern Japanese society. Since the beginning of Japanese modern era Koreans living in Japan have lived very difficult lives under the severe discrimination and exclusion from Japanese society. They have been always forced to deny their identity as Koreans, and instead regard themselves as barbarians, useless people, uninvited people and villains. This awful situation is not a necessary consequence of rapid modernization in Japan but a product of arbitrary system made by the Japanese people's sense of culture, order and humanity. I would like to clarify what made Koreans living in Japan unable to establish their identity by tracing Japanese people's "Cultural Nation Movement" in the post-war period. Michel Foucault's idea of <technologies of the self) is quite effective to analyze that complex mechanism of their identification problem.
