This study employs six variables to explore the consumption rate of durable goods and services representing the community welfare situation in Sulawesi Region. The six variables are proportion of households with high education enrollment, telephone, television, radio, and car possessions, as well as proportion of households using electricity in every village as unit of analysis. Standardized indices then used to identify the determinants for the region, rural and urban areas. The result shows a profoundly low and unequally distributed in line with the household consumption of durable goods and services across the region. There are significant differences between rural (11.74% of households) and urban (33.44% of households) areas in average of the six indicators employed. In terms of consumption distribution, in the rural areas, the consumption rate only up to 16.60% for the lowest 75% population, while in the urban areas their consumption rate is about 23.80% for the lowest 25% households. In line with the community welfare determinants, there are also differences between rural and urban areas, in the rural areas, in addition to the agriculture and service activities, financial market and population density are important determinants. However, in the urban areas, beside the agricultural and service sectors, medical accessibility and village structure/size are also significantly important determinants. Thus, community welfare situations and determinants are different matters for rural and urban areas.
