Previous researches suggest that self-oriented perfectionism is associated adversely with subjective well-being. However, the psychological processes lying in this relationship have hardly been investigated. The author proposes that self-preoccupation would mediate between self-oriented perfectionism and subjective well-being. Self-preoccupation refers to the tendency of maintaining self-focused attention that leads to psychological depression. The tendencies of being concerned over one's own mistakes and of setting overly high personal standards, which are components of self-oriented perfectionism, would have influences on self-preoccupation, which, in turn, would affect one's subjective well-being. The results of the questionnaire study sampling 152 female undergraduates supported these predictions. In addition, the direct effects of self-oriented perfectionism on subjective well-being without being mediated by self-preoccupation were also found. The existence of multiple processes by which self-oriented perfectionism affects subjective well-being was discussed.
