The pedagogical notion of incorporating expressive activities such as short plays with created texts into language classes has long attracted attention. Such activities appear to efficiently promote students' expressive abilities, autonomy, and motivation in language learning. However, not only due to various institutional restrictions in Japanese universities, but also due to a general shortage of oral expression ability required to perform in front of audiences, such activities have long been thought to be unsuitable for low-level foreign language learners. Therefore, such expressive activities have normally only been tried in higher-level classes or for special events such as university festivals. They have almost never been tried in regular classes. This paper discusses and considers an example of a video work project performed by Hiroshima University students in regular German classes at the beginner's level. Using digital videos as an indirect expression medium and new technology such as non-linear video editing and its distribution on the Internet, it is shown that project-type study such as performing short plays with created texts can be successfully incorporated into the beginners' class stage. This project requires only three 90-minute class periods, and so is integrated easily into normal course activities with no big changes needed in curricular planning. The activity produces many positive effects on language learning in general.
