The present paper points out with abundant examples that 1) nouns which usually need an article do not take any in the following contexts: when they are used with a numeral or a letter; when they are used in parentheses or in the title of a table; when they follow prepositions such as as or between; when their abstract quality or nature is focused on rather than their shape; 2) words which usually do not need an article take a(n)/the or other determiners when they are used metalinguistically; 3-a) grammatical and literary terms do not take an article when they refer to a grammatical category or a literary genre; 3-b) these terms take the when they are used in contrast with other grammatical or literary terms (contrastive use of literary terms is rare, though); 3-c) these terms are used as countable when they refer to concrete phrases or works; 4) literary works created before the invention of printing often take the; 5) nouns expressing predication (i.e., "action nouns") preceded by the indicate little semantic difference form those without the.
