Questionnaire Survey of Life Style and Health Conditions Among Leprosarium Patients : One Year After the Abolition of the Leprosy Prevention Law

Life style and health conditions were examined in a questionnaire survey of leprosarium patients. Data for this study were obtained from one of the national leprosariums in Japan. A total of 223 registered patients answered the questionnaire about their health conditions of physical, psychological, and social aspects. Two groups were (1) those who were under the age of 75 and (2) those who were 75 and over for both male and females. The results showed the presence of physical disabilities due to the advancing age for both men and women. A larger proportion of the over the age of 74 group are being satisfied in life than the other group for both men and women. This might be due to the adequate institutional care which modified the relationship between physical impairment and their life satisfaction. The social networks of the patients have changed from group activities to individual ones in one year. It is recommended that the study to be continued on a long term basis in other to identify the impact of the abolition of the Leprosy Prevention Law on the psychological and social aspects of the patients.
