A questionnaire survey to measure the health status for leprosariums patients was conducted. They were admitted to four national leprosariums of Japan. The leprosariums were located on Honshu which were in Tokyo, in Kagawa Prefecture, in Okayama Prefecture, and in Okinawa Prefecture. Eleven hundred and ninety-seven (87.6%) respondents were examined by Activities of Daily Living (ADL), Instrumental Activities of Daily Living (IADL), experience of medical examination, and examined diseases. The patients of leprosariums in Okinawa and on Honshu were similar age distributions; however the patients in Okinawa had smaller proportions of dependence in ADL and IADL, and experience of medical examination. This finding may support the result of difference of leprosy preention policy. As Okinawa Prefecture took an individual leprosy prevention policy, people with Hansen's disease could receive outdoor treatments which enabled to receive medical treatment in early stages that Honshu people with Hansen's disease could not experience. Also this finding suggests a possibility of lower proportions of LL type symptom in Okinawa which aftereffect is serious. Mild weather and effective nutrition intake may also influence on the better health status of the leprosarium patients in Okinawa.
