Hospitalized Patient's Percetion about Relationship with Nurses

The purpose of this study was to examine the hospitalized patient's perception of relationships with nurses, and to explore the factors associated with the perception. The subjects consist of 257 patients from two hospitals. As an indicator of the patient's perception, positive feeling to nurses was used. Self-administered questionnaires contained measures of sociodemographic characteristics, condition of admission, attitude toward hospital life, and positive feeling to the nurse. Although the hospitalized patients perceived a positive nurse-patient relationship in general, the means of "Understanding of personality" and "Distance to nurse" scored lower than those of "Trust", "Security", and "Understanding of personality". Regarding the factors associated with the patient's perception, it was found that patient's age, gender, and resting state were significantly associated with the patient's perception of positive feeling. In addition, the attitude toward hospital life, particularly in "The feeling of resignation" and "Trusting submission", were significantly related to the patient's perception of relationships with nurses. The findings suggest that age, gender, and attitude toward hospital life must be taken into consideration for nurses to establish effective nurse-patient relationships.
