The geographic and stratigraphic distribution of selected genera of larger Foraminifera that occur in the Americas and in the Indonesian central Pacific region during the Tertiary period is analyzed. A brief outline of the evolution of the genus Lepidocyclina is given, particularly to demonstrate the time of dispersal of this genus from America, its center of origin, to the Indonesian region. The problem of the method of migration is discussed, and a theory is presented to account for the sporadic and irregular dispersal of the various genera of larger Foraminifera. Although the stratigraphic ranges of the larger Foraminifera are useful for correlation within the individual regions, the time and method of migration indicates that the stratigraphic ranges of the genera, or even similar species, can not be used for precise inter-regional correlation.
