The Cancellothyridacea (new herein) with three families are characterized by rather simple cardinalia consisting of strong socket ridges at the base of which the crura are attached. The crura support a variable loop : the crural processes join to form a ring with the transverse ribbon=Cancellothyrididae Thomson, 1926 ; the crural processes disjunct=Chlidonophoridae Muir-Wood, 1959 ; the loop strongly transverse=Cnismatocentridae, new family. The morphology of these groups is briefly discussed together with the assigned genera. Under the Cancellothyrididae Dall's unfigured species of Terebratulina : callinome, hawaiiensis, photina and reevei are redescribed and illustrated. In addition to these two new species and one subspecies, all from the Pacific Ocean, are described. Smirnova's genus Symphythyris is discussed and its interior figured. Under the Cancellothyrididae a new subfamily, the Cricosiinae is created for small, subcircular brachiopods having the loop forming a ring attached to the characteristic cancellothyridid cardinalia. Two new genera Cricosia and Gyrosoria and Smirnova's genus Cruralina constitute this subfamily at the present time. The Chlidonophoridae is divided into four subfamilies : the Chlidonophorinae Muir-Wood, 1959, with apex of the transverse ribbon of the loop directed ventrally, including Chlidonophora Dall, and Meonia, Gisilina and Rugia Steinich : the Eucalathiinae Muir-Wood, 1965, with the apex of the transverse ribbon directed dorsally and having the single genus Eucalathis. A new species of Eucalathis from the Philippine Islands is described. The loop of Orthothyris appears to be chlidonophorid necessitating placement of the Orthothyridinae Muir-Wood, 1965, in the Chlidonophoridae. The Agulhasiinae Muir-Wood, 1965, is placed in the Chlidonophoridae. The relationship of Cnismatocentrum, sole member of the Cnismatocentridae, to the foregoing cancellothyridaceans is discussed.
