The Permian strata cropping out at the Jengka Pass in Pahang, Malaysia consist of two members, the upper Middle Permian, Limestone Member and the Upper Permian, Sandstone-shale Member. It is known that the Permian is overlain by the Middle or Upper Triassic formation by a remarkable clinounconformity. The Limestone Member is characterized by fusulinid fossils (Yabeina asiatica fauna) accompanied by corals, bryozoa and crinoids. The Sandstone-shale Member contains brachiopod and bivalve fossils in the lower fossil horizon, while bivalves and gastropods predominate in the newly discoverd upper horizon. The beds containing 24 species of plant remains are considered to represent a still higher horizon. This compositional change of organisms seems to be in well accordance with the environmental change from the open sea to lagoonal condition through inland sea. The compositional change of the fossil assemblages of the Sandstone-shale Member is quite similar to that seen between the Middle and Upper Permian faunas in the clastic facies in Japan and also to the compositional variation between the present-day benthic communities of baymouth and bayhead or inner bay in Japan. Fourteen species of bivalves (including one new species, Aviculopecten malayensis) and 8 species of brachiopods are described in this study.
