In this article, 1 try to examine some problems of "Unit-care" and "Terminal-care" in the Japanese care system for the aged. In the official documents of ministry of health, labour and welfare, a group living care is called as "Unit-care". The unit-care is usually understood as care in a small group. But this idea is misleading. The essence of Unit-care is great esteem for individuality of each person. The aim of Unit-care is a paradigm shift of care. That is shift from the care whose essence is supporting life to the care whose essence is co-living. Characteristics of Unit-Care are as follows, (1) Unit-care is a methodology in order to realize a individual care. (2) Unit-care insists on individuality of each person. (3) Unit-care insists on the importance of mutual communication between care workers and residents. (4) Unit-care needs a bottom-up organization.
