Studies in EIL (English as an International Language) have been a popular field of sociolinguistics as well as pedagogical inquiry for the past three decades. The concept of EIL is based on the notion that a language can go beyond its original linguistic and cultural frameworks. In reality, sets of indigenous patterns of English have been developed by non-native speakers in their unique ways. Japanese people, however, don't seem to know how to deal with these non-native varieties. Such uncertain attitudes towards English varieties are caused by the lack of understanding of EIL. The lack of understanding is also one of the main reasons why Japanese English education has continued to produce unsuccessful results. In order for the better understanding of EIL to take root, some kind of language awareness teaching must be developed and carried out. This paper first introduces the EIL research paradigm, which will help non-experts in EIL have a better grip in the field of EIL. Then it presents a brief outline of language awareness teaching in Europe. Finally, based on the EIL research paradigm, a pilot program for language awareness teaching is described.
