The subject of social studies has been positioned on the school curriculum since April 1947, and it was arranged that the social studies classes start in September in that year. Some schools, however, had already taught the social studies classes on an experimental basis before April that year. In Ehime Prefecture, Kawakami Elementary School in Onsen Gun(currently, Toon City) was among those schools. At the time when the official curriculum guidelines on social studies were not yet formed, competent teachers in theory and practice took the lead in conducting researches into social studies, and presented the results of their research at a workshop titled "Meeting on researches about new education mainly of social studies" on February 22 in that year. The quality of the research and practice announced by Kawakami Elementary School at the workshop was extremely high. In April that year, the said school launched full-fledged researches into social studies curriculum, starting with field survey of the area in an attempt to find out contents of social studies and teaching method based on the survey. The worked-out social studies curriculum was a core curriculum positioning social studies as its core and other subjects as peripheral to social studies. The core curriculum began catching on around 1948. However, before the core curriculum got popularity, Kawakami Elementary School had already put effort into implementing the curriculum, aiming at the core curriculum. Though the school put the core curriculum into practice by way of experiment as a transitory measure, the practice was a pioneering work in Ehime Prefecture, serving to exert a strong influence on other schools as a model school.
