The purpose of this paper is to inquire into the connection between Leon Walras(1834-1910)and Jean-Baptiste(1767-1832), which was described as 'the tradition' by Schumpeter. As Schumpeter points out, Walras's general equilibrium theory was much influenced by Say's economics. However we can find Walras's critical statements on Say and his successors in many parts of his works. This paper focuses attetion particularly on their different attitude toward laissez-faire doctrine. Section II will show that Walras's economics was rejected by Say's successors in France for methodological and ideological reasons. Section III will consider Say's influence on Walras's pure economics, perticularly on the consept of the entrepreneurship. Section IV will examine the implications of Walras's entrepreneur in his applied economics to reveal how the economic analysis that had been formed by Say to support laissezfaire doctrine, came to give Walras the grounds to maintain a directly opposite ideology.
