The feminist movement did not have a significant influence in China and Japan till the late 1970s. The number of women in China choosing to eschew the traditional role of housewife grew rapidly, but male expectations for women and the stereotypification of them meant that women finding liberation became exiles from their own culture. Domesticated women in Japan were frequently underemployed though relatively well-off in the materialistic Japanese society, especially compared to her Chinese counterpart. This paper compares feminist themes in the contemporary literatures of both countries. It compares images of exhausted women in China who are overworked and stressed to images of women in Japan who cannot keep well because they are too idle. Contemporary fiction from both cultures reveals the damaged feminine and feminist self.
