The mechanism for the reorientation of M centers in KCl crystals has been studiedby observing the anisotropic absorption induced in the crystals, which were irradiated by polarized F-or M-band light at room temperature. From the initial change of absorption in the M band measured with 〔011〕or〔011〕 polarized light, it is considered that the reorientation of the M center takes place as follows: After the excitation with polarized M-band light, an M+ center is formed as an intermediate state, and is not separated into an F- and α-center. Then, the F- or α-center portion of the M+ center is replaced by an adjacent Cl ion successivly and the axis of M+ center changes from one of {011} to another direction. On capturing an electron, the reorientation of the M center completes.
