It has been found that in additively colored KBr crystals, which contain F and Mcenters, the bleaching of M band occurs temporarily with white light irradiation at room temperature. When this decay of M band occurs, absorption bands in 700~800 nmregion increase simultaneously. Upon prolonged irradiation with white light the M bandbleaches until it reaches a minimum, after which it usually increases. From an analysisof dichroism observed in 700~800 nm bands, it has been suggested that melt-grown KBrcrystals contain small amounts of sodium. It is possible that these sodium atoms play animportant role in the bleaching of M centers. This possibility is discussed with the formation mechanism of FA and M centers.
