Plankton investigation in the adjacent waters off the Islands of Tsushima was carried out betwen July 25 and August 5,1968. The water temperature in the superficial layer is not uniform horizontally, and it varies from 22.8℃ to 27.5℃. The highest is in the southern waters off Tsushima and decreases towards the nothern parts of the Tsushima and Korea Straits. The water is relatively transparant and its transparency varies between 12 and 25 meters. The stations showing about 15 meters locate at the nothern part of Tsushima, near Iki Island, the Sea of Genkai-nada, where the coastal and offshore waters are mixed together and inshore diatoms are numerous. The settled volume of plankton per m^3 of sea water varies from 0.5 to 8.2 cc. The highest is in the southern waters and it gradually decreases towards the Sea of Genkai-nada and off Iki Island. The total number of plankton per m^3 of sea water varies between 1.8×10^3 and 10.5×10^3,and the highest is at the Sea of Genkai-nada, where coastal and inshore forms are numerous. Forty-one species of Dinoflagellates occur, of which 35 are oceanic warm water form, 4 are widespread form and the other 2 are neritic. Seventeen species of Tintinnida ciliates appear. Nine of them are oceanic, warm water form, and 6 are neritic or inshore forms. There are, however, 2 species which are ordinarily found in Japanese coastal waters during the cold season but are distributed sparsely at the northern stations off Tsushima, where water temperature shows relatively low. A few Foraminifera, Radiolaria and Hydromedusae appear, and these groups are almost oceanic warm water life. Thirty-two of Copepoda occur widely in this area, and these are the most dominant component of pelagic communities. Twenty-three of them are oceanic tropical and subtropical warm water forms, and appear more numerous at the Korea Straits The neritic and inshore forms are found in the southern waters off Tsushima, Iki Island through the Sea of Genkai-nada. Larval forms of benthic animals in these surveyed areas are not more than in the inshore waters, but distributed widely over all the stations. Sixty-five species of pelagic diatoms including chiefly neritic forms are collected. They dominate at the southern part of Tsushima, near Iki Island and the Sea of Genkai-nada. Thus, the plankton communities are composed of the mixed communities of the oceanic and neritic groups, such as diatoms, dinoflagellates, holopelagic animals together with larval forms of benthic lives. The cold water forms existing in the Yellow Sea or the southern coastal waters of Korea are not found at all in both the straits during this survey.
