The number of fish species collected from the waters of Aomori Pref., recently attains to above 600 of 193 families. From the waters of Japan Sea and Western Tsugaru Strait around Aomori Pref., the number of fish species attains to 354 of 142 families and those of the waters of the Pacific, 383 of 152 families. The abundance of the fishes known from the Pacific refers to the rich ichthyofauna of the deep sea. The fishes of northern limit of dispersal, corresponding to the coastal waters of Aomori Pref. are extremely abundant, and they are counted up 155 species. But, those of southern limit of dispersal are very poor, only 16 species. It refers to the fact that the extent of Oyashio-cold current is very wide, spreading southernly to the whole area of Tohoku District in cold seasons. When comparing to the overwhelming abundance of the fishes of northern limit of dispersal and the poverty of southern limit of dispersal, it is apparent that the waters of Aomori Pref. is located in the northern limit of temperate zone and cold-temperate zone. From the view point of zoogeography of fishes, coastal waters of Aomori Prefecture is divided into three parts; temperate zone (Japan Sea to Ohmazaki), cold-temperate zone (Ohmazaki to Pacific Ocean) and intermediate-temperate zone (Mutsu Bay).
