• The large collections of marine macrobenthic algae presently housed in the Gregorio T. Velasquez Phycological Herbarium in the University of the Philippines was the result mainly of Filipino phycologists. Major collections made during the 1950-1970 were contributed by the pioneering efforts of Professor Gregorio T. Velasquez and his students. From 1970 to the present major collections were contributed by this author and his students. In this paper the main history of the algal collections and taxonomic studies of seaweeds made in Philippines, and the contents of the collections in the herbarium are introduced.
