This paper tries to consider the structural development of a hand-loom called 'Jibata' which has been used in Japan for about a thousand years. By analysing the mechanical features of Jibata and comparing them with those of old Chinese looms, it is suggested that Jibata may have been completed in Japan or Korea, not in China. By classifying the form of Jibatas which are conserved in local museums, and investigating their distributions in Japan, it is clarified that Jibata has been used in nearly original structure in the west of Japan, but in the east of Japan Jibata was improved in form and made in smaller size in the Edo era.
