MORI Ōgai's essays on poetry-those on the translation of poetry and those on the essence of poetry-were all very suggestive and enlightening when they were written in the middle of Meiji Era, but they were not properly appreciated at that time. I consider that we should have thought highly of them as modern poetical theory of imagination.
