The effects of information reception on driving safety for various driving situations, the permissible delay in information reception, and the volume of information that can be understood while driving were experimentally investigated using a driving simulator. It was found that drivers can more easily receive information when driving along straight sections and when stopped at signals, that the delay in providing requested information should not exceed 4.5 seconds, and that if the number of key words in a news story is about ten (about 15 seconds of presentation time), the content can generally be understood regardless of the driver's information processing ability. These findings will be useful in developing information systems providing drivers content by digital data broadcasting.
