A Wavelet-based Multiresolution Medical Image Registration Strategy Combining Mutual Information with Spatial Information

Mutual information is a widely-used metric in medical image registration, which achieves good results; however it can lead to misregistration because of the absence of spatial information. In this paper, we propose a wavelet-based multiresolution medical image registration strategy combining mutual information with spatial information. In such a strategy, wavelet transform is adopted to decompose original 3D images into different resolution layers, different from the traditional Gaussian pyramid multiresolution method. In each layer, low-frequency coefficients LLL is used to compute mutual information; and high-frequency coefficients HLL, LHL and LLH are used to compute the metric of spatial information. By a linear addition, a hybrid metric is formed to combine both mutual information and spatial information. The advantage of the proposed algorithm is that the half-resolution images and the high frequency images can be obtained only in one step with the help of wavelet transform. This reduces the processing time a lot. Additionally, experiments show that the hybrid metric works better than mutual information in CT-MR registration problems.
