ARTISTIC EFFECTS OF REFLECTION AND SHADOW MODELS FOR MULTIPROJECTION IMAGE(International Workshop on Advanced Image Technology 2006)

When drawing 3-dimensional scenes by hand, artists often independently alter the projection for each object in the scene. These scene are called multiprojection images. We have developed a multiprojection rendering algorithm that can draw lighting effects : reflection, shadow, and transparency. These characteristics are indispensable for creating photorealistic computer graphics. However in multiprojection images, these are new characteristics. Drawing reflection and transparency by hand in multiprojection images is too difficult for artists, and models of the lighting effects may not be valid for multiprojection images. In this study, mainly examining depictions of reflection and shadow, we created several multiprojection images using the algorithm and investigated three functions of artistic effects : artistic expression, representation, and visualization. Two multiprojection images were created for each scene : one using our reflection and shadow model and one using a non-reflection and non-shadow model for comparison. The reflection model outperformed the non-reflection model, and it was clearly useful for achieving overall impressions of 3-dimensional space.
