It is often said that students' level is too low to do the communicative activities in English lessons. But the author believes that experiential learning based on the communicative approach is effective for students who have lost their motivation to learn English. The author conducted experimental lessons with the hypothesis that students' motivation would be promoted by classes that adopt student-centered communicative activities. These lessons were given in an English Basic class for Tokai University Bosei high school. Quite a few students said they didn't like to study English or they were not good at English. Furthermore several students who had refused to attend junior high school were included in this class. Questionnaire given in the first lesson class showed that the majority of the students thought English classes was not enjoyable. As a result, the author designed the final project as meaningful task in the real world in order to increase students' motivation. The final project of this class was to create a TV program to introduce their favorite local spots to foreigners. Beforehand, necessary knowledge and skills for the final project were given to the students in previous classes. In this project, students experienced collaborative learning and communication with people outside the classroom. The author analyzed the classes by video recording, observation report and students' journals for each lesson. The analysis shows students were highly motivated by opportunities to experience meeting people in real society. The author also discusses teaching materials for communicative activities and effective use of ICT (information and Communication Technology), which made it possible to complete this project.
