The expression besshitsutoukou, literally "attending school in a separate classroom" is used to describe that a student is able to physically come to school, but for some psychological reason cannot participate in a normal classroom, then stays in a separate place within the school. In this article, a case of school counseling involving a group of four girls in the second year of junior high school is presented. In the initial stage, they described the difficulty they had in being in a normal classroom, and this caused hyperventilation. In the second stage, they started self-laceration such as cutting their wrists. In the third stage, they verbally expressed their feelings of anger against their parents and teachers. Finally, in the fourth stage, the restoration of the relationship between them and their teacher was observed. Their problem was a result of their failure to establish intimate relationships with their friends during the elementary school years, then they had a strong approach-avoidance conflict for friends in the normal classroom. According to the developmental theory of Sullivan (1953), the intimate relationships they developed with each other in the separate classroom were a regression to preadolescence and a re-experience of chumship.
