The purpose of this study was to examine the durability, bonding strength, fluoride releasing, fluoride uptake into bovine enamel and the effect on the acid resistance for the enamel surface and to reveal the characteristics of each sealant. Four kinds of commercially available sealants were used in this study ; a light-cured fluoride releasing resin sealant (Kuraray, Teethmate F : TF), a conventional resin sealant (3M, White Sealant : WS), a glass ionomer cement (GC, Fuji-ionomer type III : T3), a light-cured glass ionomer cement (GC, Fuji-ionomer type II LC : LC3/1). Fuji-ionomer type II LC (LC3/2) which was prepared in the same consistency as T3 was also included. The bending strengths of the sealants after immersion in distilled water (DW) and 0.01M lactic acid buffer solution (LAB) was in the order of WS, TF, LC3/1>LC3/2>T3. The elastic modulus of the sealants after immersion in DW and LAB was in ordered of LC3/1,T3>LC3/2>WS, TF. However no significant difference was seen between the bending properties before and after immersion in DW (6 month) and LAB (1 month). An eroded layer was observed in the range of 100 to 200 μm from the surface of the cured glassionomer cement (T3) after immersion in LAB for one month. However the effect of LAB for the photo-cured type glassionomer (LC3/1 and CL3/ 2) was almost negligible. The ions eluted from three sealants in LAB were Si^<4+>, Al^<3+>, Ca^<2+> and F^- for T3,Si^<4+> Al^<3+> and F^- for LC3/1 and LC3/2 and F^- for TF. The total amount of the eluted ions was in the order of T3>LC3/1,LC3/2>TF. The amount of each ion eluted from the sealants increased in proportion to the square root of the immersion time. The bonding strength of the sealants to bovine enamel was in the order of TF, LC3/2>LC3/1>T3,but showed no significant difference among the sealants. The bond strength of each sealant to the etched enamel was greater than those in non-etched enamel. The total amount of fluoride released from the sealants into DW was in the order of T3>LC3/2>TF>LC3/1. They also increased in proportion to the square root of the immersion time. Within 1 or 2 weeks after immersion in DW the velocity of fluoride releasing of each sealant was rapidly decreased, but the decreasing tendency in TF and LC3/2 was slightly smaller than those of T3 and LC3/1. Fluoride acquired by bovine enamel from the fluoride-releasing sealants was in the order of LC3/2>T3,TF>LC3/1,but the amount of fluoride decreased by 1M-KOH treatment and was in the order of LC3/2>TF>LC3/1>T3. The acid resistance on the enamel surface treated with each sealant increased and the order in the acid resistance to 0.2M-acetic acid buffer solution was : T3>TF>LC3/2>LC3/1. The results showed that Teethmate F (TF) and Fuji-ionomer Type II LC which was prepared in the same consistency as T3 (LC3/2) have a superior character as fissure sealants.
