Type XII and XIV collagens are genetically and immunologically distinct members of the family of fibril-associated collagens with interrupted triple helices(FACIT)and are components of the collagen fibrils in tissues bearing high tensile stress. We have prepared monoclonal antibodies and used them to investigate the distribution of these collagens in bovine skin. In fetal bovine skin, type XII collagen was observed in the upper dermis and type XIV collagen was found in the lower dermis as we have shown previously. In adult bovine skin, type XII collagen was highly enriched in the papillary dermis, particularly just beneath the dermal-epidermal junction, but type XIV collagen was not detected. Both collagens were clearly observed around the connective tissue sheath in hair follicles. However, neither collagen was present in the dermal papilla. Type XII and XIV collagens may play an important role in the maintenance of hair follicle structure.
