To improve the bond strength of MMA-TBB resin to contaminated enamel, four types of monomers [2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA), 2-succinoxyethyl methacrylate (2SEM), 4-Methacryloxyethyl trimellitic acid anhydride (4META) and 2-phenylethyl methacrylate (2PEM)] which have hydrophilic and/or hydrophobic groups, were used for preparation of comonomers. Experimental direct bonding adhesives (DBA) consisted of a MMA solution with each monomer (0〜50mol%), PMMA powder and an oxidized tri-n-butyl borane (TBB-O) as an initiator. Etchants were 2,10,35,and 50wt% phosphoric acid aqueous solutions. The compressive shear bond strengths of experimental DBAs to contaminated enamel were measured after immersion n 37℃ water water for 24h or thermal cycling (5,000 cycles). The etched enamel surfaces and the fractured brackets and enamel surfaces after the bond test were observed with SEM. Also, and the physical properties (amount of water sorption and flexural strength) of DBAs were measured. The results were as follows ; 1) The bond strengths of DBA containing 2PEM to contamination-free and contaminated enamel decreased with increasing molar ratios of 2PEM. 2) The DBA containing 2SEM (5,10mol%) or 4META (3,5mol%) showed the higher bond strength to enamel contaminated with water and saliva than the others. For all DBAs, the bond strengths decreased in the blood contamination, regardless of the monomer concentration, except for the DBA contaning 4META. 3) The treatment of 35wt% phosphoric acid solution provided the high bond strength to saliva-contaminated enamel than the others. The SEM micrograph showed most clearly the appearance of enamel prisms on the enamel surface treated with 35wt% phosphoric acid aqueous solution. 4) For the water and saliva-contaminated enamel, the bond strength of DBAs containing 2SEM and 4META, which have hydrophilic and hydrophobic groups were significantly higher than the others. And there were no difference in the bond strength of DBAs to blood-contaminated enamel. 5) The amount of water sorption of DBA containing HEMA and DBA containing 2SEM was higher than that of MMA-DBA and DBA containing 2PEM. Meanwhile, there were no significant differences in the flexural strength of DBAs. 6) The bond strength of DBA containing HEMA to contamination-free and contaminated enamel were significantly reduced by thermocycling. 7) The SEM micrograph showed that the failure for all DBAs occurred at interface between the enamel and the bracket during bond testing. The length of resin tag formed in water, saliva and blood contaminanted enamel was shorter than that in contamination-free enamel. The result in this study suggested that MMA-TBB resin with 3〜5mol% 2SEM or 4META, which have both hydrophilic and hydrophobic groups, can reduce the adverse effect of water and saliva-contamination using 35% phosphoric acid solution.
