Acupuncture is one of the therapeutic method in oriental medicine that has progressed tremendously in china. In dentistry, it has been gaining popularity in recent years. In orthodontics, there have been reports on its use in pain control and orthodontic tooth movement. It is well established that the electric acupuncture (EAP) not only alleviates pain sensation but also stimulates the autonomic nervous system causing vascular dilation with increased volume of blood flow. Meanwhile, it is well known that the bone remmodeling following orthodontic tooth movements closely related to improvements in the vessels or blood flow. The purpose of this study is to examine the process of new bone formation in the midpalatal suture histopathologically after expansion weighing EAP. One hundred and eighty five male Sprague-Dawley rats weighing approximately 200g each were divided into 13 groups consisting of 15 rats each, except for normal controls; the 13 groups comprised of one normal control group, 6 expansion control groups (expansion group) and 6 expansion groups with EAP (EAP group) . Except for the normal control group, an expansion device was installed between maxillary incisors for two days. The expansion space was retained throughout the experimental period after treatment. EAP stimulation (50Hz, 0.2msec) was delivered to needling point which fitted for human Ho-Ku 30 min, per day for all experimental periods with the right Ho-Ku as a cathode and the left as an anode. Ho-Ku is a spot which is the highest point when the first digit comes into contact with the second digit on back of the forepaw. The animals were sacrificed at 1,3,5,7,10 and 14 days after expansion. The specimens were examined with Hematoxylin Eosin stain, Azan Mallory stain, labeling method and contact microradiography. The results were as follows. 1. In the EAP groups, a fewer broken collagen fiber was observed as compared with the orher experimental groups. 2. In the EAP groups, many enlarged blood vessels, fibroblasts, and osteoblasts, were observed and osteoid formation was observed more actively, as compared with the other experimental groups from 1 day to 7 days. 3. In the EAP groups, the new bone formation was facilitated in the midpalatal suture, and sutural space was filled with the new bone, as compared with other groups from 7 days to 14 days. From these observations, it was suggested that the EAP stumulation and enhanced the cell proliferation and activity of osteoblasts and fibroblasts. Consequently, EAP was found to be effective in osteogenesis and for the stabilization of the midpalatal suture areas after maxillary expansion.
