Standard cephalometric facial growth charts for both sexes using a longitudinal Japanese sample with harmonious jaw relationship were prepared. The parameters were as follows anterior cranial base length (S-N), upper facial height (N-ANS),lower facial height (ANS-Me),total facial height (N-Me), maxillary length (A'-Ptm'), mandibular total length (Cd-Gn), ramus height (Cd-Go) and body height (Go-Pog'). We hypothesized that the standard deviations score of these measurements corresponding to the present age were maintained during the pubertal growth period. Standard facial growth charts for both sexes were prepared, and the hypothesis was evaluated. The correlation coefficient between SD score at initial stage and that at adult stage was 0.7 or more, showing significant correlation at a significance level of 0.1 percent, except for maxillary length. SD score corresponding to bone age tended to show higher correlation when compared to chronological age in female. These growth charts can be applied to clinical use as follows: evaluation of the individual growth timing, detection of abnormal growth, prediction of final length of linear measurements and evaluation of growth influences by orthopedic treatment.
