A slight amount of indium coexisting with CdS vapor enormously promotes the crystallization of CdS on silica substrate as if indium vapor behaves as a catalyst. This phenomenon was first observed on the concave termination of In-doped CdS crystals prepared by the Piper-Polich method. A further study of the rate of crystallization of CdS vapor with and without an indium dot presented an explanation of the catalysis of indium: the indium vapor produces CdS molecules from Cd and S vapor and the generated polarity in a molecule exerts an adhesive force to silica that is grcater than to metals and semiconducting materials.
