A picosecond optical gate using a photo-induced grating created in a nonlinear medium by the interference of two intense picosecond optical pulses is proposed. Diffraction by the photo-induced grating was tested with CS_2 (carbon disulfide) Kerr liquid and a mode-locked Nd: glass laser. The experimental results showed that the diffraction can be used as a picosecond optical gate.
