Relation between Polarity of Substrate Surface and Liquid Crystal Molecular Orientation

A new method to measure the polarity of the substrate surface by applying the principle of chromatography is proposed. By using this method, the relation between the liquid crystal molecular orientation and the polarity of the substrate surface is made clear. That is, liquid crystals with amphiphilic impurities align perpendicular to the strong polar surfaces such as In_2O_3 or Al_2O_3.
