Effects of Device Parameters on a Photoelectrophoretic Display System

The device parameters of photoelectrophoretic display cells with a photoconductor electrode were varied, and the optical characteristics viewed through the front and rear electrodes were measured. The behavior of ions in the suspension as well as that of pigment particles is found to be an important factor in the formation of images. Also, when a smaller amount of particles is present, carrier injection from the photoconductor to the particles has an undesirable effect on the image contrast, particularly at higher voltages and exposures. This effect is significantly diminished by employing an insulator-coated photoconductor electrode. The results obtained are discussed here, using a multilayer model for the pigment particles.
