At an oil leakage site, remediation was conducted following a risk-based decision making process. This is one of the few case studies of risk-based corrective action (RBCA) applied to actual contaminated sites in Japan. After the initial response action was completed and freephase gasoline was removed, Tier 2 risk assessment was conducted, which showed that a critical exposure path was soil leaching to groundwater and that a critical COC (chemical of concern) was benzene. To mitigate the risk, contaminated soil exceeding SSTL was excavated and remediated by land farming. As a result, the remedial cost was reduced to 1/3 of non risk-based remediation.
