After the recent exfoliation accidents of lining concrete lumps in mountain tunnels in succession, ideal method of managing maintenance of existing tunnels has been discussed. Since the influence of the traffic accident on road users is extremely great, early detection of the changes by daily inspection becomes very important. Since mountain tunnel is a linear structure in the ground, the design is usually conducted by using false work structure based on the past experience. On the other hand, considering the actual situation regarding the maintenance management, it is difficult due to the ambiguity of design to conduct maintenance management based on the precise soundness evaluation. Considering the above situation, this paper introduces the actual situation about the investigation of changes in existing tunnel constructed by sheet piling and the repair work. Furthermore, the authors proposed an ideal method of maintenance management for future mountain tunnels.
