Effects of submergence on yielding characteristics of Hakone volcanic ashes subjected to compression were examined. A sample at natural state exhibited a larger value of yield stress as compared to the submerged sample, that was observed in eighteen cases out of a total of twenty-eight (i.e., 64%). In addition, a tendency was clear for the yield stress of old loams to be larger than that of the newly deposited loams. This may be explained by the fact that the natural water content of old loams was on average lower involved with higher suction in fabrics. Kanto loams tend to show the maximum value of yield stress at optimum water content possible due to the responsibility of soil suction.
